How to Coach Basketball

Why do players love to scrimmage?

Because they want to move. They want to play.

The last thing that you want your basketball practices to be is "coach centered."

Here are some examples of what a "coach centered" basketball practice looks like:
(a coach centered practice is where all decisions are made solely by the coach)
  1. Players standing, staring, waiting for their turn to jump in.
  2. Players standing, staring, listening to the coach talk for extended lengths of time.

Alternatively, here are some examples of "player centered" basketball practices.

(Note: The more autonomy that players are given in practices to make decisions, the more equipped they are to make in game decisions).

  1. Putting players up against a specific defense that you will face (ie., a press or a zone) without interjecting or stopping to teach for the first 5-10 minutes allows players to take initiative, experience some success on their own, and play through their failures.
  2. Allowing players to choose a specific game or skill for 5-10 minutes - such as "11-Man" or a shooting drill to start a practice can greatly influence the positive energy throughout the entire practice.

If you want to know how to coach basketball and have your players always thinking:
'I never want to miss practice. I would miss way too much!'

Then you have to begin to conduct more 'player centered practices.'

  3. Always condition with a basketball.
  4. Conduct team drills early on in practice.
